As part of the Laugh Together project, focus groups, interviews, and surveys were conducted in Poland, the Netherlands, Greece, Cyprus, and Belgium, involving 156 professionals engaged in youth work. The discussions and survey findings provided valuable insights into both the shared challenges and the unique experiences identified across the participating countries. Several key themes emerged clearly from the research.
First, young people are facing multiple and interconnected social and cultural challenges, including issues related to integration and belonging, trauma and psychosocial difficulties, as well as identity struggles.
Second, youth workers highlighted the important role of humour in reducing stress and building trust – both of which are essential for creating safe and supportive learning environments. Most participants reported using humour regularly in their everyday work with young people.
Finally, the research showed that young people strongly prefer interactive and participatory learning methods, such as group activities and workshops, discussions, and sharing circles.
